I have been listening to the band Brand New since I was 17, which is inching closer to 15 years now. After 4 shows, buying hard CDs and songs on iTunes (sometimes the same songs) and countless hours listening, it’s safe to say that Brand New is my favorite band.
Brand New is an alternative rock band from Long Island new York. They have released four full albums.
Your Favorite Weapon – 2001
Deja Entendu – 2003
The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me – 2006
Daisy – 2009
When you listen to a certain band for years, the lyrics become part of your memory, part of you. I have heard the words countless times, yet somehow they still hit a nerve, or cause goosebumps. They recall a moment in time that I cannot release from my mind.
I wanted to share some of my favorite lyrics:
Your Favorite Weapon
“We got inches away, and I never even got close.” Last Chance to loose your keys
“You couldn’t make me not alone/Nothing’s absolutely definite til it’s gone” Logan to Government Center
“Do you understand?/It’s only you, beautiful./Or don’t want anyone./If I can choose, it’s only you.” No Seatbelt Song
“You’re as subtle as a brick in the small of my back.” Seventy Times 7
“Up the stairs: the station where the act becomes the art of growing up.” Sic transit Gloria
“If I could I would shrink myself, and sink through your skin to your blood cells, and remove whatever makes you hurt” Guernica
“I will hold the past over your head. I’ll speak my mind whenever I feel slighted. I am hellbent on extracting all of my revenge.” Good To Know That If I Ever Need Attention All I Have to do is Die
The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me
“Nothing gets so bad, A whisper from your father couldn’t fix it.” Sowing Season
“So do you think that we could work out a sign So I’ll know it’s you and that it’s over so I won’t even try” Jesus
It might be hard to believe but I am about honesty. I have not been able to get into the Daisy album like I have with the others before. I certainly listen to it. For me, the band went too far with the religious metaphors, and I feel that they tried too hard to be “different” to the point of losing who they are.
This band is secretive, and has this insane under-ground cult like following. The day they decide to come out with a new album, (if they ever do), I will absolutely get myself to the nearest Best Buy and get the full CD.
If you have never listened to any of their music, or have taken a break from them I hope this inspires to take a listen. This band is sort of my musical comfort blanket and it always feels safe and warm to come back too.
