Makeup brushes are typically used on a daily basis, touching and picking up makeup particles and from the face also picking up dead skin, dirt, and oils. They are little dirt traps that you essentially rub all over your face that could cause, acne, clogged pores, and other breakouts. The best way to prevent all this build up is to regulatory clean your brushes. Regular, as in on a weekly basis.

I use the Ecotools Makeup Brush Cleansing Shampoo. This shampoo is parabens, phthalates, petroleum, and perfume free. It is also hypoallergenic. I have tried other brush cleansers but they are often filled with perfumes or dyes and are rather pricey. Most of my brushes are from Real Techniques that I get from Ulta; these brushes are fantastic quality and are affordable. I can usually find sets of them at TJ Maxx. I’m also picky about my brush handles; I want them comfortable to hold and flat on the bottom versus pointy for storage reasons. I also have a couple of brushes from MAC and Sephora that I love.
You can see that my brushes are overdue for a cleaning. (Shhh, it’s been well over a week since I’ve cleaned them)
I found this silicone brush cleaning pad at TJ Maxx it has several types of grooves and on the top for deeper cleaning and suction cups on the bottom to secure it to the sink while cleaning. I add a few drops of the cleaner to the pad.
Then you rub and brush the cleaning pad working up a lather. The foam is pink from all the built up blush in the brush.
I typically hold a few similarly sized brushes at once to speed up the cleaning process.
Once you have scrubbed all of the color out of the brushes, rinse them under water. I don;t hold up under the faucet. I try to avoid pushing water down into the base where the bristles are secured to the handle. If you let water sit down there, it could mold, rot, or cause the brushes to fall apart.
After rinsing the brushes, I rub them on a towel to remove as much of the water as I can. I then reshape the brushed and lay them flat on a towel to dry overnight.
